Kansas Reads to Preschoolers Kansas Reads to Preschoolers is the first One State, One Book project sponsored by the State Library of Kansas! Christie Pearson Brandau, State Librarian, announced the project in early June on KANLIB-L noting that Governor Kathleen Sebelius is the Honorary Chair and that this celebration-of-reading to children coincides with Children's Book Week November 14-20, 2005. The project goal is to highlight the importance of reading to children -- birth to five. According to the the Kansas Action for Children that's 226,453 children! Kansas Parent Information Resource Center Title V horization of the Elementary and Secondary Educatiof the reauton Act, No Child Left Behind , authorizes establishing federally funded parental information and resource centers that provide training, information and support to parents. The Centers also provide support to SEAs (state education agencies & departments of education), LEAs (local education agencies & school districts), and other organizations that carry out parent education and family involvement programs. Four-Year-Old At-Risk Program This program provides a quality early childhood educational opportunity for four year old at-risk children to prepare them to be successful in school. There are multiple criteria to qualify for the program. In addition to the educational program, children receive services such as counseling, health, transportation and nutrition services. Parents as Teachers PAT is a primary prevention program. It is designed to maximize children's overall development during the first three years of life, thus laying the foundation for school success and minimizing developmental problems that might interfere with learning. PAT is designed to serve ALL parents-from single, teenage mothers to two-parent, well-educated families. Early Head Start Early Head Start provides in-home, comprehensive, support services to pregnant women and families with children up to age 4. Early Head Start supports parents in fulfilling their roles and helps them move toward economic independence. Families must meet income eligibility guidelines. At least 10% of the total enrollment is available for children with disabilities. Parents working, attending school, or participating in job training can apply for child care services. Mary Weathers

Kansas Coordinating Council on Early Childhood Developmental Services The Kansas Coordinating Council on Early Childhood Developmental Services provides advice and assistance to all of state government on matters pertaining to preschool children with (or at risk of) developmental delays/disabilities. The Council can serve as: a voice for advocacy on behalf of young Kansans, a liaison between state government and local communities, a place to bring difficulties one has encountered, and much more. Child and Adult Care Food Program The Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) is a child nutrition program of the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) which is administer by the Nutrition Services Team, Kansas State Department of Education. The program reimburses childcare centers, adult day care centers and family day care homes for serving nutritious meals to enrolled participants.
